Consistency and Phenomenology of Four-Dimensional Strings

چکیده
In this talk we discuss string consistency requirements on four dimensional string models, namely the cancellation of target space duality anomalies. The analysis is explicitly performed for (hypothetical) orbifold models assuming the massless spectrum of the supersymmetric standard model. In addition, some phenomenological properties of fourdimensional strings, like the unification of the standard model gauge coupling constants and soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, are investigated.

Theory and Phenomenology of Type I strings and M-theory†
The physical motivations and the basic construction rules for Type I strings and Mtheory compactifications are reviewed in light of the recent developments. The first part contains the basic theoretical ingredients needed for building four-dimensional supersymmetric models, models with broken supersymmetry and for computing lowenergy actions and quantum corrections to them. The second part cont...
متن کاملCosmic Acceleration and the String Coupling
In the context of a cosmological string model describing the propagation of strings in a timedependent Robertson-Walker background space-time, we show that the asymptotic acceleration of the Universe can be identified with the square of the string coupling. This allows for a direct measurement of the ten-dimensional string coupling using cosmological data. We conjecture that this is a generic f...

Conventional solutions to the strong CP problem all require the existence of global symmetries. However quantum gravity may destroy global symmetries, making it hard to understand why the electric dipole moment of the neutron (EDMN) is so small. We suggest here that CP is actually a discrete gauge symmetry, and is therefore not violated by quantum gravity. We show that four dimensional CP can a...
متن کاملPhenomenology of Low Quantum Gravity Scale Models
We study some phenomenological implications of models where the scale of quantum gravity effects lies much below the four-dimensional Planck scale. These models arise from M-theory vacua where either the internal space volume is large or the string coupling is very small. We provide a critical analysis of ways to unify electroweak, strong and gravitational interactions in M-theory. We discuss t...
متن کاملType IIB Orientifolds, F-theory, Type I Strings on Orbifolds and Type I - Heterotic Duality
We consider six and four dimensional N = 1 supersymmetric orientifolds of Type IIB compactified on orbifolds. We give the conditions under which the perturbative world-sheet orientifold approach is adequate, and list the four dimensional N = 1 orientifolds (which are rather constrained) that satisfy these conditions. We argue that in most cases orientifolds contain non-perturbative sectors that...
